Question
Hi Mr.Wilson
I use a data base ,access, for my handicapping hobble.
I use gusseamation for some results. I would like to improve.
I look at 2 col.'s
Col 1 is the horse data of speed ranked 1,2,3 etc.
col 2 is the results 1,2,3 etc
I then isolate all the 1's in col 1 and divide that # by the total say 10%
I isolate all the 1's in col 2 30%(#/ total)
Now if I do the same for class,a different col I might  get 30% to get 30%
In my mind I think 10% to get 30% is better than 30% to get 30%
I tried using excell but the terms excape me.
Is there some easy way to get the true result?

Best regards
Anson

Answer

Testing Results
Excel
In Excell, the results can be put in columns A and B.  In column C, put =if($A#=1,A$#,"").  The "" could be replaced by a 0.

A real good way to do this would be to put 0.1 in C2, 0.2 in D2, and 0.3 in E1.  In C2, put =if($A2=B$1,A2,"").  In C1 put the letter A and in F1 put the letter B.

The $ in front of the 1 can be gotten by typing B1 and hitting F4 a few times.  Do it until you have the right expression for that cell.

Cells C3 through C13 can be highlighted and then an Edit Fill Down can be done.  Highlight the block C3:E13 with the mouse (that's holding down on the left mouse button) and do an Edit Fill Right.

At the bottom of the column, put in =sum(C3:C13).  This can be copied (cntl-C) and pasted (cntl-V) to D and E in the same row.

Access
If you want to know how to do it in Access, create a table.  In desing table, create two numeric values.  It will ask you if a primary key is desired (that's a record that counts which record you are on).  As far as putting in 1's, 2's, or 3's, you could sort on the column you are interesed in and input 1's in the column that keeps track of them.  I don't know of an easy way to put them in Access, but it is good for calculations.

Back to Excell
I'm not sure what to do with the percents in the question.  It sounds like maybe you want a 10% in C2, which is 0.10, and a 20% in D2, which is 0.20, and maybe a 30% in E2, which is a 0.30.  Perhaps you want the same values in column F, G, and H as in C, D, and E, respectively.  The first three columns should be on column A and the second three should be on column B.

Just copy the cells over and edit the top one.  Change the both A's to a B's.  Do an Edit Fill Down and and Edit Fill Right.

Over in I3, put =IF(C3=F3,1,0)*IF(C3>0,1,0).  Highlight the area as big as the areas below A and B, and do an Edit Fill Down and an Edit Fill Right.

If you want a sum, put it in at the bottom of the first column.  Highlight that cell to the right and do an Edit Fill Right to fill in the sum below each column.

CommentI know how hard it is to answer a question when the person asking the question isn't sure of what the the question is,you did extremely well with what you I gave you. Thanks for the links I will explore them. Best regards Anson

Expertise

I can answer any question in general math, arithetic, discret math, algebra, box problems, geometry, filling a tank with water, trigonometry, pre-calculus, linear algebra, complex mathematics, probability, statistics, and most of anything else that relates to math. I can even tell you it takes me over 2,000 steps to go a mile, but is that relevant?

Experience

Experience in the area; I have tutored people in the above areas of mathematics for almost two years in AllExperts.com. I have tutored people here and there in mathematics since before I received a BS degree almost 25 years ago. In just two more years, I received an MS degree as well, but more on that later. I tutored at OSU in the math center for all six years I was there. Most students offering assistance were juniors, seniors, or graduate students. I was allowed to tutor as a freshman. I tutored at Mathnasium for well over a year. I worked at The Boeing Company for over 5 years. I received an MS degreee in Mathematics from Oregon State Univeristy. The classes I took were over 100 hours of upper division credits in mathematical courses such as calculus, statistics, probabilty, linear algrebra, powers, linear regression, matrices, and more. I graduated with honors in both my BS and MS degrees. Past/Present Clients: College Students at Oregon State University, various math people since college, over 7,500 people on the PC from the US and rest the world.

Publications
My master's paper was published in the OSU journal. The subject of it was Numerical Analysis used in shock waves and rarefaction fans. It dealt with discontinuities that arose over time. They were solved using the Leap Frog method. That method was used and improvements of it were shown. The improvements were by Enquist-Osher, Godunov, and Lax-Wendroff.

Education/Credentials
Master of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematics. Bachelor of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematical sciences. This degree involved mathematics, statistics, and computer science. I also took sophmore level physics and chemistry while I was attending college. On the side I took raquetball, but that's still not relevant.

Awards and Honors
I earned high honors in both my BS degree and MS degree from Oregon State. I was in near the top in most of my classes. In several classes in mathematics, I was first. In a class of over 100 students, I was always one of the first ones to complete the test. I graduated with well over 50 credits in upper division mathematics.

Past/Present Clients
My clients have been students at OSU, people nearby, friends with math questions, and several people every day on the PC, and you're probably make one more.
