Question
solve (x^2-6x)^2-22(x^2-6x)-135=0 and come up with the answers of 5,1,9,-3

Answer
(x^2 - 6x)^2 - 22(x^2 - 6x) - 135 = 0

think of this problem like this

X^2 - 22X - 135 = 0

now use the quadratic formula

X = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)

X = (-(-22) ± sqrt((-22)^2 - 4(1)(-135)))/(2(1))
X = (22 ± sqrt(484 + 540))/2
X = (22 ± sqrt(1024))/2
X = (22 ± 32)/2
X = (-10/2) or (54/2)
X = -5 or 27

whereas X = x^2 - 6x, so now you have

x^2 - 6x = -5 or x^2 - 6x = 27
x^2 - 6x + 5 = 0 or x^2 - 6x - 27 = 0
(x - 5)(x - 1) = 0 or (x - 9)(x + 3) = 0
x = 5 or 1 or x = 9 or -3

ANS : x = -3, 1, 5, 9
