Hi, Celine,

Most of this is simply pattern-matching.  You were taught this:

Slope-intercept form:

y = mx + b.

A form is a pattern.  You match a pattern to an example.

2x + 5y = 10  does not match in this form, so you work it a bit:

You need LHS = y and nothing else:

2x + 5y = 10
-2x       -2x      << Subtract.
----------------
5y = -2x + 10
5y = -2x + 10
--   ---  ---   << divide
5     5     5

y = (-2/5)x + 2  << Ready to match the pattern.

In the pattern, m is the coefficient of x.
In the example, -2/5 is the coefficient of x.

-2/5 matches m

In the pattern, m is the slope.
-2/5 matches m
-2/5 is the slope.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
