Question
Dear Paul,

How would I solve 1.98^2x=2 ?

I know how to set it up:

X = log 2 / 2log 1.98

But I can not seem to get the right answer.

Thanks,

Bella

Hi, Bella,

I assume you meant:

1.98^(2x) = 2

Then

ln (1.98^(2x)) = ln 2

2x ln 1.98 = ln 2
    ln 2
x = -------
   2 ln 1.98

So far so good.
That should be about 0.5 or so.  (ln 2 is very close to ln 1.98)Now get out your trusty calculator.(in Windows, of course.)

Press:

2
ln
/
2
=
/
1.98
ln
=

That gives me 0.50735645021008734370450675626165, about 0.51.

Is that what you got?

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
