About Paul Klarreich
Expertise
I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience
I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.

a. What is the ratio of protein to calcium?
b.What is the ratio of fat to carbohydrate to sugar?
The answer is a. 550:7
             b.  53:168:24
I'm confused as to how they got these answers, if you could show me how to do the working out I would appreciate it.I am a year 11 student and am having difficulties with this subject.

Hi, Kieren,

Ratios are fractions, but we often use a colon ':' instead of a fraction line '/' and all we really need to watch is consistent units -- grams and mg have to be adjusted.

a. What is the ratio of protein to calcium?

Protein:  3.3g is 3300 mg.
Ca: 42 mg.

Ratio:  3300/42.
Reduce to lowest terms:  550/7
Put a colon:  550:7

Nothing fancier than that.

b.What is the ratio of fat to carbohydrate to sugar?

Fat: 5.3 g
CH: 16.8 g
Sugar: 2.4 g.

Ratio:  5.3/16.8/2.4

Clear fractions (times 10)

Ratio:  53/168/24

Put colons: 53:168:24
