5=a1
10=a1+2b1+4c1+8d1
10=a2+2b2+4c2+8d2
40=a2+4b2+16c2+64d2
b1+4c1+12d1=b2+4c2+12d2
2c1+12d1=2c2+12d2
2c1=0
2c2+24d2=0
Answer Put this in matrix format first with the variables in the order
a1, b1, c1, d1, a2, b2, c2, d2. Line up the equations underneath.

Solve by going across the matrix. Find one equation to reduce to 1 and subtract it from the other equations to make that column 0.
Take the first equation,
1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 5
and subtract it from
1 2 4 8 0 0 0 0 10
giving
0 2 4 8 0 0 0 0 5
Divide this equation by 2, giving
0 1 2 4 0 0 0 0 2.5
Subtract it from from the fifth equation, giving
0 0 2 8 0 -1 -4 -12 -2.5.
Keep reducing in the same way until all of the variables are in only one equation (yes, that is a lot of steps and even more equations that need adjusting each time) and you'll have the answer. Note that the equations are in neat columns here and they would look better at that end if they were imported into a spreadsheet.
