Question
I used the quadratic formula to try to solve this question, but I can't seem to get rid of k.  I'm not sure if I am going about this correctly.  Can you please give me some guidance?

Find the values of k for which the equation 9x^2-6x+k=0 has the following:  

a.  Real Double root
b.  2 real roots
c.  imaginary roots

According to the quadratic formula, the solution to ax^2+bx+c is
x=(-b +/- sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a.  Note that the +/- is for plus or minus, thus we get two values for x.

a) To make a double real root, b^2-4ac must be 0.
b) To make 2 real roots, b^2-4ac must be greater than 0.
c) To make imaginary roots, b^2-4ac must be less than 0.

Note that the value of k is the value of c.
In other words, when b^2-4ac = 0 tells us that
b^2 - 4ak = 0.  This would say that k = b^2/(4a).

This is the answer to a.

To answer b, k must be < that value that was the answer to a.

To answer c, k must be > that value that was the answer to a.

Publications
My master's paper was published in the OSU journal. The subject of it was Numerical Analysis used in shock waves and rarefaction fans. It dealt with discontinuities that arose over time. They were solved using the Leap Frog method. That method was used and improvements of it were shown. The improvements were by Enquist-Osher, Godunov, and Lax-Wendroff.

Education/Credentials
Master of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematics. Bachelor of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematical sciences. This degree involved mathematics, statistics, and computer science. I also took sophmore level physics and chemistry while I was attending college. On the side I took raquetball, but that's still not relevant.

Awards and Honors
I earned high honors in both my BS degree and MS degree from Oregon State. I was in near the top in most of my classes. In several classes in mathematics, I was first. In a class of over 100 students, I was always one of the first ones to complete the test. I graduated with well over 50 credits in upper division mathematics.
