Question
Hi! I need help with this Algebra problem...I think the answer is 2, The weight is divided by 2, but I am unsure. Can you help? Thank you in advance!

Problem: The weight of a body above the surface of the earth is inversely proportional to the square distance from the water of the earth. What is the effect on the weight when the distance is multiplied by 2?

Answer:
1) The weight is multiplied by 4
2) The weight is divided by 2
3) The weight is divided by 4
4) The weight is multiplied by 2

Answer
No, the weight is divided by 4.  If A is INVERSELY proportional to B, then when B is multiplied by something, A is divided by it.

If A is INVERSELY proportional to the square of B, then when B is multiplied by something, A is divided by the square of it.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
