Question
QUESTION: Hello:

I read the following in an old business mathematics textbook: "Express 13 mills as a decimal part of $1.00."

I can determine the answer as follows: There are 1000 mills in or per $1.00. 13 mills divided by 1000 mills/$1.00 equals $0.013, the answer.

My question isas follows: What does "...as a decimal part of $1.00" indicate or represent from "Express 13 mills as a decimal part of $1.00."?

I thank you for your reply.

ANSWER: Hi Kenneth,

I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you asking what 13 mills represent or something?

Anyways, could you please restate your question?

Thanks,
Robi

QUESTION: Hello:

I want to thank you for your reply.

13 mills equals $0.013.
What does $0.013 as a decimal part of $1.00 indicate. In other words, what does "...a decimal part of $1.00" represent?
I cannot explain it better.

I thank you for your reply.

Answer
Hi Kenneth,

0.013 dollars as a decimal part of 1.00 is basically representing what fraction as a decimal it is. Essentially, it is useful for comparing different things. Say I ask you what is bigger, 5 cents, or 3456 mills, the way you would go about finding it is transforming them both to decimal parts of 1.00. Then, whichever one is bigger is the larger one.

I hope this helps,
Robi
