    I need to know what level of math you are doing. There are many applications. You can use matrices to solve a system of linear equations and/or equalities. For example suppose you own a manufacturing business and you produce a part and you have choices between different types of metals and these have different cost factors. If you can write a mathematical model representing the cost for each and the strength of each and perhaps the weight of each you can you a matrix to determine the most cost effective while finding the lightest and strongest. this would be maximizing the strength and minimizing the cost and the weight and these are called constraints.
As far as websites google matrices and you will find a lot of information.
