Question
Find the center of a circle with equation x2 - 2x + y2 - 4y - 8 = 0

Answer
x^2 - 2x + y^2 - 4y - 8 = 0

x^2 - 2x + y^2 - 4y = 8

(x^2 - 2x + 1 - 1) + (y^2 - 4y + 4 - 4) = 8

(x^2 - 2x + 1) - 1 + (y^2 - 4y + 4) - 4 = 8

add 1 and 4 to both sides.

(x - 1)^2 + (y - 2)^2 = 13

Center : (1,2)
Radius : sqrt(13), just in case you needed to know.

if you use www.quickmath.com to graph it, you will find out that they both are the same equation.
