Question
given that y = (cos^3x)/3 what is dy/dx?

Answer
Kristin~
dy/dx is the first derivative of y with respect to x. The derivative of the cos x is -sin x but you have 3x so you need to use the chain rule and multiply by the derivative of 3x as well which is just 3 so combining this info [cos 3x]/3 = (1/3)(3)cos x = cos x
