Question
the sum of three consecutive numbers is 105,find the numbers

Answer
Hi Ruth~
    As with all word problems there is an unknown so there must be a variable. Let n = the first number then the next consecutive number is x+1 and the third consecutive number is x+2. You are given that the sum of these 3 numbers totals 105, so add them up.

x + (x+1) + (x+2) = 105
3x + 3 = 105
3x = 102
x = 34

Ok since the first number was x, the next consecutive number is x + 1 = 34 + 1= 35 and the next consecutive number is x + 2 = 34 + 2 = 36. Thus the three consecutive numbers that sums to 105 are: 34, 35, 36
