Question
Translate the following problems into algebraic equations.  Do NOT solve the equations; simply translate them.

Show how you arrive at each equation.  Say what quantity each variable represents.  Identify the terms, constant terms, and coefficients in each equation.

1. What number is 12% of 85?

2. The sum of four consecutive odd numbers is 136; what are the numbers?

3. A woman buys four CDs for $52.92 which includes 8% sales tax.  How much did each CD cost?

Answer
Hi Justin~
For #1 think of the problem as: let x = the thing you are being asked about 'what number' and 'is' usually means equals and 12% of means .12(85) so you have x = .12(85)

#2  The sum means the answer when you add. Four consecutive odd numbers means let x = the first odd consecutive number then x +2 is the 2nd odd consecutive number, x+4 = the 3rd odd consecutive number and x+6 = the 4th odd consecutive number. Now add them up: x + x+2 + x+4 + x+6 = 136. Solve for x and find those 4 consecutive odd numbers

#3  If something includes sales tax that means the price is less than the total. You are looking for the cost of each CD. Since they don't give you more info you assume the CD's all cost the same so let x = the cost of one CD. So 4x has to equal the total for all four CD's without tax. The 8% sales tax is based on the cost for the four CD's, i.e., .08(4x).
So the total price $52.92 = .08(4x) + 4x and solve for x.
