Question
If you were to randomly cut through a sphere, what would be the average diameter of the circle exposed?
I have a sample that contains multiple spheres.  I took a section of the sample, and measured the diameter of each circular profile of the spheres I could see.  I want to derive the average diameter of spheres from the average diameter of the circular profiles.

Answer
Matt~
You have a sample that you want to estimate the population from. Your sample is the diameter of each circular profile of the spheres you see. Find the mean your sample and to find the average diameter of the circular profiles.
