Question
QUESTION: Hello:

The line below is divided into thirds:

2%______3%______4%______5%

What is the line below divided into if one of the percentages is not a whole number? The line is no longer evenly divided.

2%______3%_______4.4%______5%

I thank you for your reply.

ANSWER: There is a difference of 1% between each of the numbers in the first design.
Since 5% - 2% is 3%, it is evenly divided into thirds, just like you said.

Now with the 4.4% the line could still be divided into 3 even sections, but that would not be the correct mathematical way to divide the line.  I have seen it done in Excel when it was told that the x axis was just lablels, but these are numbers.

What you would need to do in this case is count fiths.
2 to 3 is 5 fifths.
3 to 4.4 is 7 fifths.
4.4 to 5 is 3 fifths.

There is still a total of 3, which is 15 fifths, but now the x axis is divided differently.

2 would be at 0 units from the left,
3 would be at 5 units from the left,
4.4 would be at 12 units from the left, and
5 would be at 15 units from the left.

QUESTION: Hello :

I want to thank you for the reply and answer.

Since the 0.4 in 4.4 is in tenths, can the line also be divided in tenths or count it in tenths?

2 to 5 is 10 tenths
3 to 4.4 is 12 tenths
4.4 to 5 is 8 tenths

The total is 30 tenths which is still 3.

I thank you for your follow-up reply.

Answer
Note that you've got the right idea.
The first interval is from 2 to 3.  3 - 2 = 1, so there are 10 10ths between 2 and 3.
The next interval is from 3 to 4.4.  4.4 - 3 = 1.4, so there are 14 tenths.
5 - 4.4 = 0.6, so there are 6 tenths between the last two.

Slow down on your math or double check it.

I know, I've made the same kind of error,

Expertise

I can answer any question in general math, arithetic, discret math, algebra, box problems, geometry, filling a tank with water, trigonometry, pre-calculus, linear algebra, complex mathematics, probability, statistics, and most of anything else that relates to math. I can even tell you it takes me over 2,000 steps to go a mile, but is that relevant?

Experience

Experience in the area; I have tutored people in the above areas of mathematics for almost two years in AllExperts.com. I have tutored people here and there in mathematics since before I received a BS degree almost 25 years ago. In just two more years, I received an MS degree as well, but more on that later. I tutored at OSU in the math center for all six years I was there. Most students offering assistance were juniors, seniors, or graduate students. I was allowed to tutor as a freshman. I tutored at Mathnasium for well over a year. I worked at The Boeing Company for over 5 years. I received an MS degreee in Mathematics from Oregon State Univeristy. The classes I took were over 100 hours of upper division credits in mathematical courses such as calculus, statistics, probabilty, linear algrebra, powers, linear regression, matrices, and more. I graduated with honors in both my BS and MS degrees. Past/Present Clients: College Students at Oregon State University, various math people since college, over 7,500 people on the PC from the US and rest the world.

Publications
My master's paper was published in the OSU journal. The subject of it was Numerical Analysis used in shock waves and rarefaction fans. It dealt with discontinuities that arose over time. They were solved using the Leap Frog method. That method was used and improvements of it were shown. The improvements were by Enquist-Osher, Godunov, and Lax-Wendroff.

Education/Credentials
Master of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematics. Bachelor of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematical sciences. This degree involved mathematics, statistics, and computer science. I also took sophmore level physics and chemistry while I was attending college. On the side I took raquetball, but that's still not relevant.

Awards and Honors
I earned high honors in both my BS degree and MS degree from Oregon State. I was in near the top in most of my classes. In several classes in mathematics, I was first. In a class of over 100 students, I was always one of the first ones to complete the test. I graduated with well over 50 credits in upper division mathematics.

Past/Present Clients
My clients have been students at OSU, people nearby, friends with math questions, and several people every day on the PC, and you're probably make one more.
