Question
A 21m by 25m rectangular garden is to have a gravel path of uniform width bordering it. How wide is the path if the total area covered by the garden and path is 837m squared?

Answer
The total path has width w.
The are of this path would be 21w + 25w + 21w + 25w + 4w².
That is 4w² + 92w.

The total area is 21 x 25 = 525.
The area that is left over on the path is 837 - 525 = 312.

This gives us the equation 4w² + 92w = 312.
These terms are are divisible by 4, which gives w² + 23w = 78.

This comes down to solving the quadratic w² + 23w - 78 = 0.
Now b²-4ac is 23² + 4(78) = 529 + 312 = 841, and that is 29².

So the answer for w would be (-23+29)/2 = 3.



Now since the path is on both sides, add 6 to the length and width to get the new area.  This gives 27 x 31.  As can be seen, this is 620 + 217 = 837, so the answer is correct.

The classes I took were over 100 hours of upper division credits in mathematical courses such as calculus, statistics, probabilty, linear algrebra, powers, linear regression, matrices, and more. I graduated with honors in both my BS and MS degrees. Publications
My master's paper was published in the OSU journal. The subject of it was Numerical Analysis used in shock waves and rarefaction fans. It dealt with discontinuities that arose over time. They were solved using the Leap Frog method. That method was used and improvements of it were shown. The improvements were by Enquist-Osher, Godunov, and Lax-Wendroff.

Education/Credentials
Master of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematics. Bachelor of Science at OSU with high honors in mathematical sciences. This degree involved mathematics, statistics, and computer science. I also took sophmore level physics and chemistry while I was attending college. On the side I took raquetball, but that's still not relevant.

Awards and Honors
I earned high honors in both my BS degree and MS degree from Oregon State. I was in near the top in most of my classes. In several classes in mathematics, I was first. In a class of over 100 students, I was always one of the first ones to complete the test. I graduated with well over 50 credits in upper division mathematics.
