Question: I have a test next Monday and I am stuck on a few problems that I really need help on. Any help at all will be appreciated. Thanks.

1.   Simplify -(square root)-169

ALWAYS simplify  sqrt( - something) as
sqrt(- 1)sqrt(that something) =
i sqrt(that something)

Now put back that FIRST minus and get your answer.
a)13i
b)–13i
c)13(square root)i
d)-13(square root)i

2.   Find /-1+i/.  /=Euclidean norm

The 'norm' of  x+iy is the distance from the point (x,y) to the origin.

-1 + i   is  -1(your x)  +  i * 1 (your y)

The point is (-1,1)

Take it from there.

a)1
b)(square root)-1
c)(square root)2
d)(square root)-2

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
