Question
How do you factor completely 3a^2b+6ab-24b? My math book is of no help. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi,
3a²b + 6ab - 24b = 3b(a² + 2a - 8)
To factor the term in brackets you need two numbers with a sum of +2 and a product of -8. We have +4 and -2 in this case. So,
a² + 2a - 8 = a² + 4a - 2a - 8
= a(a + 4) - 2(a + 4)
= (a + 4)(a - 2)
Therefore,
3a²b + 6ab - 24b = 3b(a + 4)(a - 2)
