Question
A rectangular flower bed has a perimeter of 54 feet. 7 additional beds were placed side by side next to the first bed.  The new bed is twice as long as the original bed.

Calculate dimensions of original bed.  Thanks.

"A rectangular flower bed has a perimeter of 54 feet."
Let L and W be the length and width, respectively.
L + W = 27
W = 27 - L

"7 additional beds were placed side by side next to the first bed."
Dimensions of the new bed: L by 8W

"The new bed is twice as long as the original bed."
8W = 2L

Substitution
8(27 - L) = 2L
216 - 8L = 2L
10L = 216
L = 21.6 ft
W = 27 - L = 5.4 ft
