Advanced Math/Cost- Flooring

Oak flooring is to be installed in a room with dimensions 16' x 18'.  Determine cost of the flooring at $75 per 1000.  Allow 1/5 for matching and waste.

"Allow ⅕ for matching and waste" is ambiguous. Does the ⅕ refer to the area of the floor, or to the quantity purchased? I'll show both interpretations.
area of floor = 16 ft × 18 ft = 288 ft²

Case 1: ⅕ the area of the floor must be added for matching and waste
matching and waste = ⅕ of 288 ft² = 57.6 ft²
flooring purchased = 288 + 57.6 = 345.6 ft²
345.6 ft² × $75/(1000 ft²) = $25.92
Case 2: ⅕ of the flooring purchased is for matching and waste.
Purchase x square feet of flooring.
⅕ of x is for matching and waste.
⅘ of x = area of floor = 288 ft²
x = 360 ft²
360 ft² × $75/(1000 ft²) = $27

I cannot say which approach you are expected to use.
