Question
The question is the hypotenuse of a right triangle 10 inches long and one of the sides is 7 inches long. Is the other wise longer or shorter than the 8 inch side, and justify the answer.

Answer
When dealing with right triangles only, you can use the formula

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

a = 7
b = ?
c = 10

7^2 + b^2 = 10^2
49 + b^2 = 100
b^2 = 51
b = sqrt(51)

when rounded, you get

about 7.14143

The other side is shorter than 8 inches, but longer than the 7 inch side(in case that is what you meant to say).
