Hi, Trisha,

When you send a problem, be sure to include the instructions.  If this is a homework problem from a textbook, it will have those instructions somewhere, telling you just what you are supposed to do. (Warning -- sometimes those instructions are on the previous page.)

Without them I have to guess what to do, and if I guess wrong, that doesn't do you any good.

Here I think the instructions say:

Remove parentheses and simplify:

4(y+2)+5(y-2) =
4y + 8 + 5y - 10 =
9y - 2

That's it.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
