Question
A homework problem is (3.86 X 10^15)*(2.15 X 10^-7). I need to write the quotient. When I do the division, it does not look right. Is it a straight forward problem, or is there factoring or something else I am missing?
Thanks.

Answer
Your problem looks like multiplication which is a product and not a quotient

(3.86 * 10^15)(2.15 * 10^-7)
(3.86 * 2.15) * 10^(15 + (-7))
8.299 * 10^(15 - 7)
8.299 * 10^8

--------------------------------

The quotient would look like this

(3.86 * 10^15)/(2.15 * 10^-7)
(3.86/2.15) * 10^(15 - (-7))
(3.86/2.15) * 10^(15 + 7)
(3.86/2.15) * 10^21
ANS : about 1.795 * 10^21
