Question
Hello

I need to find the answer to (41.4 miles) divided by (30 mph)  When i work it out I always get the answer 1.38 hours, but i know that this cannot mean it takes 1 hour and 38 minutes to travel 41.4 miles at 30 mph right?  I'm just having a terribly hard time getting the correct answer.  I was hoping you could steer me in the right direction and tell me how to work it out correctly?

Thank you

Answer
Hi Amy,

Your answer is correct. It's your interpretation that is wrong. 1.38 hours does not mean 1 hour and 38 minutes; it means 1 hour and 0.38 of an hour. Now, there are 60 minutes in one hour, so 0.38h is actually 0.38h*60min/h = 22.8 min, which is reasonable, as 41.4 is a little less than one and a half of 30.

You're most welcome.

Jack.

Mathematical questions related to computer science are also highly welcomed! I can also answer some basic questions in discrete mathematics (logics, sets, some algorithms, basic number theory). I am also studying physics (mechanics in particluar), so I am willing to answer some questions relating to it.
