Question
hi. I believe there is a formula which can show 2+2 can equal 5.. do you know this formula please?  thanks

Answer
Hi, Andyc,

Yes.  The formula is  0 = 1.

From this you deduce:

 0  = 1
2+2  = 2+2
------------  ADD
2+2+0 = 2+2+1
2+2   = 5

There are also some others like this.  There is a book entitled, as I recall, "Mathematical Fallacies", that has a bunch of these.  They are lots of fun.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
