Question
A motorboat can go 14 miles downstream on a river in 20 minutes. It takes 30 minutes for this boat to go back upstream the same 14 miles. Find the speed of the boat.

Answer
14 = (1/2)(x - w)
14 = (1/3)(x + w)

14 = (1/2)(x - w)
28 = x - w
x = w + 28

(1/3)(w + 28 + w) = 14
2w + 28 = 42
2w = 14
w = 7

x = 7 + 28 = 35

The motorboat is traveling at 35mph
