Hi, Ryan,

You have left out a piece of information -- what is the compounding interval, if any.  If there isn't one, then use the simple interest formula:

I = Prt, where

I = the interest earned, in dollars.
P = the Principal amount ($5000)
r = the interest rate per year (0.05)
t = the time period in years  (0.75)

So, I = $5000 (0.05) (0.75) and you can use your calculator for that.

IF, however, your cd gets compound interest, compounded at some period, things become more complex.  (discussion on request.)

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
