Question
Solve by completing the square 3x^2-8x-6=0.

Answer
3x^2 - 8x - 6 = 0

add 6 to both sides

3x^2 - 8x = 6

divide everything by 3

x^2 - (8/3)x = 2

divide (8/3) by 2, then square it, and add it to both sides

(8/(3 * 2))^2 = (8/6)^2 = (4/3)^2 = (16/9)

x^2 - (8/3) + (16/9) = 2 + (16/9)

x^2 - (8/3) + (16/9) = (18/9) + (16/9)

x^2 - (8/3) + (16/9) = (34/9)

put the left side into a perfect square

(x - (4/3))^2 = (34/9)

sqrt both sides

x - (4/3) = (sqrt(34))/3

add (4/3) to both sides

x = (4/3) ± (sqrt(34)/3)

or

x = (4 ± sqrt(34))/3

so

x = (4 + sqrt(34))/3
x = (4 - sqrt(34))/3
