Question
Solve by completing the square 4x^2 +2x - 1 = 0.

Answer
4x^2 + 2x - 1 = 0

add 1 to both sides

4x^2 + 2x = 1

divide everything by 4

x^2 + (1/2)x = (1/4)

find half of (1/2), square it, then add it to both sides

x^2 + (1/2)x + (1/16) = (5/16)

factor the left side into a perfect square

(x + (1/4))^2 = (5/16)

sqrt both sides

x + (1/4) = ħsqrt(5/16)

x + (1/4) = ħ(1/4)sqrt(5)

subtract (1/4) from both sides

x = (-1/4) ħ (1/4)sqrt(5)

so

x = (-1/4) + (1/4)sqrt(5) or (-1/4) - (1/4)sqrt(5)
