Question
Thanks for answering my other question.  I just have one more.  I need to find the exact value of
(1/cos^2 40deg.)-(1/cot^2 40deg).  I'm not sure how to go about solving this one either.

Hi, Sarah,

****** VIEW THIS IN COURIER FONT *******

We will use these trig properties:
         1
tan x = -----    (I)
       cot x
       sin x
tan x = ------   (II)
       cos x

1 - sin^2(x) = cos^2(x)   (III)

As you are about to see, the example has nothing to do with 40 degrees.

   1            1
--------- -  ---------   >> The example.
cos^2(40)    cot^2(40)

    1
--------- -  tan^2(40)   >> Use I
cos^2(40)

    1       sin^2(40)
--------- -  ---------   >>  Use II
cos^2(40)    cos^2(40)

1 - sin^2(40)
-------------   >> Combine fractions.
cos^2(40)

cos^2(40)
----------  >> Use III
cos^2(40)

= 1

(You knew that would happen, didn't you?)

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
