Question
You inherit $18,750 with the stipulation that for the first year the money must be placed in two investments paying 10% and 12% annual interest, respectively.  How much should be invested at each rate if the total interest earned for the year is to be $2117?

Thanks for you help,
Dan R

Answer
.10x + .12y = 2117
x + y = 18750

10x + 12y = 211700
x + y = 18750

Multiply the bottom by -10

10x + 12y = 211700
-10x - 10y = -187500

2y = 24200
y = 12100

x + y = 18750
x + 12100 = 18750
x = 6650

Not 100% certain on the understanding of certain word problem, but here is what i get. Please let me know if it is correct so i will know if i did it correctly so in case i get another question like this.

$6650 at 10% interest
12100 at 12% interest

Also to let you know, even though i took all kinds of math in high school, word problem were never my strong suit.
