Question
When n is divided by d, the quotient is 40 and the remainder is 52. Give a possible pair pair ov values for n and d.

Answer
Hi Brian,

Okay, let's think of it this way:  Remember when you divide whole numbers, like 17 / 4, you say its 4 remainder 1, or you can write 17 / 4 = 4 + 1/4?

So basically we are saying that the division = quotient + remainder/divisor.  Then here we have:

       n / d = 40 + 52/d

Multiplying through by d:

          n = 40d + 52

So t get a pair of values, suppose d = 10; then

          n = 40(10) + 52 = 452.

You could pick any d value and get the corresponding n value.
