Question
please solve:
2x squared +3x+8=0

Answer
Hi Alisa,

I don't know what level of algebra you are at, but to solve this you have to use the Quadratic Formula, since it is not factorable:

  2x^2 + 3x + 8  ---------> a = 2  b = 3  c = 8

so x = [-3 +/- sqrt(3^2 -4*2*8)] / 2(2)

  x = [-3 +/- sqrt(-55)] / 4 = -3 +/- i * sqrt(55)] / 4

where i = the imaginary unit, sqrt(-1)

So you get complex roots here.

Hope this helps you.
