Question
I need to draw a cogwheel (needs to be accurate). I think that involves dividing a circle into equal parts. How can I divide a circle of any size into equal parts?

Thought I'd ask a mathematician. I'd be grateful for any information!

Hi, Emile,

I'm not sure exactly what a cogwheel looks like, but  dividing a circle into n equal parts is not a known construction.  In fact, I believe it is impossible to do in general.  To divide a circle into n parts you will want to construct an angle of  360/n degrees.

But an angle of 20 degrees is known to be non-constructible.  (Something about it being impossible to trisect an angle.)

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
