Question
Hi, I am in warehouse shipping and my company is going to be using a pallet labeling program that assigns each pallet an 18 digit number. Each number is random and unique to the pallet it is on. I am curious how many number combinations are there for an 18 digit code?

Hi, Eli,

Good news.  If there are 18 digits in each number, and each digit is 0..9, (that's 10 choices) then the number of possible labels is  10^18.   That's one billion billion.

It will take you a while to use them up.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
