Question
how many gallons of a 12% salt solution should be added to 10 gallons of an 18% salt solution in order to produce a solution whose salt content is between 14% and 16%?

Answer
(.14 to .16)(10 + x) = .12x + .18(10)
(1.4 to 1.6) + (.14x to .16x) = .12x + 1.8
(.14x to .16x) - .12x = 1.8 - (1.4 to 1.6)
.02x to .04x = .4 to .2
x = 20 gallons to 5 gallons

so you will need to add 20 gallons to 5 gallons respectively.

by this i mean 20 gallons to get a 14% solution and 5 gallons to get a 16% solution.
