Question
hi

im having a little trouble figuring out when a sequence is a gp .how can i tell ? example 2+6+18+54+162+468

if i divide sucessive terms  i get a common ratio of 3 as  in this example is this a  good way to tell ?

Answer
Since the pattern is to multiply 3, then this is a geometric progression.

if it where something like

2, 6, 10, 14, 18...

then this would be a arithmetic progression, since the pattern is to add 4.

But be careful, sometimes you may have a pattern in which the pattern is dealing with every other number.
