Question
Hi, I have a very simple question.  I'm in pre-calc.  How do you factor something like:

9c^2 - 24cd + 16d^2  ?

Also, what about:

c^2d^2 - 10cd + 16

This is actually work that I was out of school for, and thus missed, but it's due tomorrow, so any help would be greatly appreciated!  THANK YOU!

Answer
Hi, Brit,

I guess that answers my question.

But, in general, you probably are learning an important skill in mathematics (and in life) -- how to deal with things that are somewhat similar, but a little different from a situation you have seen before.

It's really simple -- where there are similarities, you apply them, where there are differences, you deal with them in some way.

Expertise

I can answer questions in basic to advanced algebra (theory of equations, complex numbers), precalculus (functions, graphs, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and identities), basic probability, and finite mathematics, including mathematical induction. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Abstract Algebra -- groups, rings, etc. and Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity. I won't understand specialized engineering or business jargon.

Experience

I taught at a two-year college for 25 years, including all subjects from algebra to third-semester calculus.
