One month Mary used 1/6 of her monthly salary for a car payment and 1/4 more than the car payment for rent. What fraction of her monthly salary did Mary use that month for the car payment and rent combined?  

Answer
(1/6)x + (1 + (1/4))x

(1/6)x + ((4/4) + (1/4))x

(1/6)x + (5/4)x

(4/24)x + (30/24)x

(34/24)x

(17/12)x

(1 + (5/12))x

In words, 1 and 5 12ths x

Since it said (1/4) more than the car payment, i believe that is saying (1/4) the car payment plus the car payment.

also to let you know, x stands for her salary, so the true answer is (1 + (5/12))
