Question
If x+3=12 and 2/3x-y=5, what is the value of x?

Answer
If you are talking about

x + 3 = 12
(2/3)x - y = 5

x + 3 = 12
x = 9

(2/3)x - y = 5
(2/3)(9) - y = 5
(18/3) - y = 5
6 - y = 5
-y = -1
y = 1

x = 9

-----------------------------------------------------------

However, if by this you meant

x + 3y = 12
(2/3)x - y = 5

Multiply bottom by 3

x + 3y = 12
2x - 3y = 15

3x = 27
x = 9
