Question I have original Diablo, applied patch from website, but it still freezes up a lot, more the deeper I go, currently on 8 trying to go to 9, but freezes completly when I go downstairs. Win 98, PII350 Sony Vaio fast CD rom. Any patches or suggestions? Turn off everything but Explorer and Systray, which seems to delay first freeze a bit. But still complete freeze when attempting level 9! CD access light stays on.

It sounds like your on the right track with shutting everything down, to bad that didn't take care of the problem. Which version of Diablo do you have? v1.02 through vs1.09? Are you online at the time? Check here, and make sure you have downloaded the correct patch for the version of the game you have. http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdb0389 If that patch doesn't work, I would do an uninstall shut down my comp and then reinstall. Let me know if this works.
