Question
hi, i was wondering whether you could help me with a problem i've been having with morrowind,
the thing is, whenever i try to install it, it stops when 79% complete and this message comes up--
'component transfer error
component: data files
file group: data files
File: D:/data2.cab
error: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error'.
do you know what i can do about this?
thanks for your time,
james

Answer
James,
First, make sure all your video drivers are updated, then make sure your anti virus software is shut down. I'm assuming your OS is XP. Follow these guides from http://helpdesk.gamehelper.com

Windows 2000/XP
1. Click on Start then Control Panel.
2. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click on Morrowind, then click on the Change/Remove button.
4. Click on the TES Construction Set, then click on the Change/Remove button.
5. Once the uninstall is complete, close all of the open windows.
6. Double click on My Computer and find the folder the program used to be installed in.
7. Click on the program folder once to highlight it and press the DEL or Delete key on the keyboard to send the folder to the Recycle Bin.
8. Next, open My Computer again and find the folder C:\Windows\Temp.
9. Once in this folder, Click on Tools, then Folder Options. Click on the View tab, then click on Show hidden files and folder to place a check by it. Click on Apply, then OK..
10. Click on Edit at the top of the screen, then Select All, then click on File, then Delete. Answer yes to any of the prompts that appear.
11. Next, open My Computer again and find the folder C:\Documents and Settings.
12. Double click on the folder named after the login name (e.g. if you're login is "Bob", then double click the folder named Bob)
13. Double click the Local Settings folder.
14. Double click the Temp folder.
15. Click on Edit at the top of the screen, then Select All, then click on File, then Delete. Answer Yes to any of the prompts that appear.
16. Once this is done, close all open windows.
17. Empty the Recycle Bin by double clicking on the Recycle Bin and click on File and then Empty Recycle Bin.
18. Once this is done, close all open windows.
19. Go to Start, Run, and type in msconfig. Click on Selective Startup and temporarily uncheck Load Startup Group Items. Click on Okay and Yes to restart.
20. Put the Morrowind CD 1 into the drive and install the program.
21. Install Tribunal. If you do not have Tribunal, skip this step.
22. Install Bloodmoon. If you do not have Bloodmoon, skip this step.
23. Download the latest patch from http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

NOTE: If you are using Morrowind only and do not have the expansions installed, then get the Morrowind patch. If Morrowind and Tribunal are installed alone, then install the Tribunal patch ONLY. Do not apply the Morrowind patch. If you have Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon, then install the Bloodmoon patch ONLY. Do not install the Morrowind or Tribunal patch. If you are using Morrowind and Bloodmoon alone, then install the Bloodmoon patch ONLY. Do not install the Morrowind patch.

24. Run the patch from the Morrowind folder.

Good Luck!
Jan
