Advertising/Where do screen writing and video production fit in the Advertising world?
Expert: Peter Gabany - 10/10/2008
QuestionHello,
I am currently a sophomore attending a four year university in North Carolina. I am planning on declaring as an Advertising major with a minor in Communications relatively soon. My ideal career path lies along the lines of screen writing and video production with televised advertisements (radio is also a possibility). I do have actual work experience (though limited) with drafting video scripts, marketing plans, and small degree of video editing experience. Most recently, I've interned at a non-profit agency drafting video scripts and marketing plans for a new advertising initiative they were cooking up. My question is in regards to were my experience thus far fits into the world of advertising. Could you perhaps give me some general jobs titles or a general area of employment of someone such as myself? What other skills should I look to add to my repitoire as to be more widely marketable?
-Many thanks in advance

AnswerStephen,
Good question. There is no better time that I can see for your particular skill set. Ad agencies have not as yet seized on the potential but the YouTube boom has open tremendous doors for media mavens.
Video blogs are just starting to catch fire. Almost to the point where if you don't have one - you aren't even there. We are using video more and more to increase the excitement on client websites.
We are currently producing 4 video spots to reposition a leading real-estate personality in the region. Video has its strengths and place.
I would set my sites on interactive companies and with your insight and education you should be quite a find.
Let me know how you make out,
Pete
