Advertising - How much/how to charge?

Expert: Peter Gabany - 7/28/2009

Question
Hi Peter, I have a great opportunity for acting as "media buyer/planner" for a niche online publication, but I don't know how much to charge/ and what is the most common practice -- as a freelancer (% of the ad cost? how much?). Can you help me on that with "clear" figures? (I'm talking about North America market). Thanks in advance for your attention. Teresa.

Answer
Teresa,

Please feel free to give me a call to discuss - 905-885-9895 - it is odd that there would be a buyer / planner needed on that side of the business but I guess anything is possible. What would your task be - to buy ads (online and print) to help drive people to the site (online publication). Would they not use SEO, adwords (and the like) to move that traffic? And what would there be a commission on - all the ads that you purchase on their behalf? What ever you do make certain that you have a double indemnity clause on your insertion orders and frankly - take NO liable position on their behalf. Have the media companies bill the publication direct and if salary is based partly on commission make certain that you are compensated either by the media or the online publication.

Something is wrong here - probably my understanding of what your position will be. I recommend that you call if you wish.

Pete
