Advertising/Major

Question
Sean-
Sorry I keep asking questions, but I'm trying to reword it so it can be fully answered.  As I said before I'm a business major, with a focus in Marketing Communications, and a Digital Arts Minor.  In my minor I will be using Photoshop, Illustrator etc. and the major has advertising classes.  Will this be enough to get my foot in the door, either in Copywriting, or Art Direction(I'm not sure which I'd like to do yet.)

I'm a sophmore if that helps.
Thanks again

Answer
Hi, Peter

In our business, it's less about the paper and more about the book. In other words, a degree is nice; but it's your portfolio (and your ability to discuss how you came up with your ideas) that will get you the job.

Being undecided as a sophomore is OK, but don't paint yourself into a corner by being average at both. You have to be "T" shaped, as the folks over at R/GA say - broad awareness of the industry, with one really, deep skill set.

If you'd like to read up on how to build a good, modern portfolio, check the archive for some of our older articles on our ad school blog.
