QuestionHello. A friend of mine is a graphic designer, for an advertising and marketing company. She enrolled in a three year program at our local community college.
I am wondering what a job of this nature would entail?
And what special skills and talents would be necessary for an individual to posess, in order to be sucessful at a career in this field?
It sounds interesting, and I am wondering whether I should look into it or not.
The only downfall is that she told me there isnt that much money in it.
But finding a job that I can enjoy, and excel in is more important to me, than becoming rich.
I would appreciate any information or advice you could offer.
Thanks so much.
AnswerA graphic designer or art director needs to be able to design pages, brochures, posters, and anything else printable including billboards. A good eye for design, creativity, patience and accuracy are also important. You also must possess a knowledge of computer design and graphic programs.
Some of the work includes actual design and other pieces are production... getting specs from a printer and working with vendors on jobs.
The money isn't particularly great depending on which market you are in. But if you are creative and are good with computer design then it may be the job for you. At our agency we have five art directors or production assistants.
From my work with our art directors they are a very creative group and enjoy this design work as well as their own art work.
Best of luck. Aa
