Why are some companies using "gross- out ad compaigns to sell their product

I know not what commercial you are referring to, but it is my experience that these type of commercials work. Maybe not with you but with the target audience that they are trying to reach.

Macs - a convenience store was marketing a cool drink last summer that they called Zit - the poster for the drink was a kid squeezing a pimple into a cup of refreshing beverage - for me it turns my stomach thinking about it but for a 12 year old - like my kid - he had to try it. He liked the ad campaign.
