Advertising/Switching careers
Expert: Sean Trapani - 5/23/2007
QuestionQUESTION: My queries may seem odd, but at the ripe old age of 29 I want a career change. I have been working in a school library for the past 3 years. I got my undergraduate degree in psychology and a masters in...gasp, Library Science.Needless to say my current job has me bored.Anyway, my life long goal is to own my own business. However, I dont want to rush into that. With all of that being said, I have always had a fondness of art and a love of business. I read the curriuculm for a bachelors in Advertising and it seemed perfect. I dont know where to go exactly but is it too late to enter this field and should I even pursue a second bachelors in advertising or is it a waste of money? Thanks in advance
ANSWER: Hi, Valerie
Let me ask you one question before I get into details:
What about advertising made you consider it?...working with clients? Planning strategies? Writing? Designing?
You mentioned a fondness of "art." But I'm not sure if that fondness translated to any of your hobbies, or you were more of a spectator.

QUESTION: I think it is the Designing that must appeals to me. I read a website that had gave a curriculum for a degree in advertising and I like every one of the classes. Also, I love art I took many extra art courses in college for the heck of it. I now perfecting my drawing. Hope this helps
AnswerOK, Valerie, this does help
My belief is that you should follow your bliss, to quote Joseph Campbell.
I worked with a few people in my ad agency days who came into advertising as a second career. It's not the rule, mind you. But it's definitely done.
If you're looking to get in on the design/art direction side, you will need some specialized training. So I definitely think it's a good idea to get another bachelor's degree. This will open more doors, and give you the chance to develop a portfolio of work, which is what really gets you a job in the ad business.
Best of luck!
Sean
