Question
My name is Ashley & I've started a mag at my high school.I need to know how to get advertising in my mag 'cause I know its going to cost a lot of money to print & stuff (especially since the mag is free).

Answer
Ashley,
Glenn A. Fraller here again with a very important element I forgot to mention. . . Hopefully your teacher would have already have covered this but just in case . . .

The cost. After you have the mockup or dummy created with number of pages, take this with an idea of type of paper you want. Cheap! Is always good but think about BLEED THROUGH! This is seeing the opposite side through the side you're reading. Too cheap paper is too thin so ask about 24# that 24-pound paper - ask the printer who is way more familiar with paper than I. GET AN estimate in writing. It should be good for ninety days. After that figure is achieved price the ads accordingly: 4 quarters to a page, 8 business cards to a page etc. You might even turn a profit and be able to pay yourself and your help or put it in a fund for prom or party or your future. . .

Good luck and the best of everything.

Expertise

I started in digital graphics in 1989 with a MAC SE30. That little box replaced an 895 pound Compugraphics 7770. It cost me dearly! Tens years before that, I was focused on quality paste-up mechanicals using Journeyman methods. I am an accomplished typographer being able to us type as form and function. Today, I operate OS X on MACs at work and XP-Professional on my PC at home. I can answer any question with respect to Adobe Creative Suites and QuarkXpress. I am confident I can help you quickly! A lot quicker than dropping your question to a forum. I am also a digital file troubleshooter. I make designers files work within the confines of computer-to-plate printing systems.

Experience

Expert in the areas of: digital design, spreadsheet formulation, database formulation using FileMaker Pro, digital and conventional photography, file conversion (mac-to-pc and back), concepts on creating high resolutions PDFs, QuarkExpress and Adobe Creative Suite. I hold a BA degree that bears Industrial Education and Technology, School of Industrial Arts, specializing in Graphic Communication. I've kept up on technological changes for the past 20 years!
